Comprehensive Examination

  • 1)

    Purpose: to evaluate each student’s basic knowledge and research proficiency in his/her major fields and to qualify thesis submission

  • 2)

    Eligibility:
    A. Master program : students who have registered (or will be registered) for more than 3 semesters, earned more than 18 credit hours with GPA over 3.0
    B. Ph.D. program : students who have registered (or will be registered) for more than 4 semesters, earned more than 27 credit hours with GPA over 3.0
    C. MA/Ph.D. Integrated program:
    • students who have registered (or will be registered) for more than 5 semesters with GPA over 3.0
    • students who entered this program at the 3rd semester have registered (or will be registered) for more than 3 semesters with average GPA more than 3.0
    ※ Students who completed a study enrollment (research registration) are also eligible.

  • 3)

    Dates: every late March and late September (Refer to Dongguk Graduate School Homepage(gs.dongguk.edu) or Pharmacy School for the detailed information)

  • 3)

    Subject:
    A. Master program : 2 subjects chosen by the department (common elective and major subject)
    B. Ph.D. and MA/Ph.D. Integrated program : 3 subjects chosen by the department (common elective and 2 major subjects)
    5) Pass Criteria: score higher than 70 out of 100 from each subject (each subject can be approved by pass)
    6) Exemption Qualification: Comprehensive Exam is exempted if one of the following conditions is satisfied.
    A. Students publish a research article in a well-known domestic/overseas academic journal before the submission of a thesis for a degree instead of writing a comprehensive examination

    ① Students who completed registration for more than 4 semesters (more than 3 semesters for early completion of master’s program)
    ② Earned (or will earn) minimum number of credits for completion with GPA over 3.0
    ③ Students who earned pre-requisite courses with GPA over 3.0 (only applicable to recipient for Pre-requisite courses)
    ④ Students who submitted a research plan for thesis and a pledge of research ethics
    ⑤ Students who passed the foreign language exam and comprehensive exam
    ⑥ ‘Pass’ on the preliminary evaluation of abstract for dissertation

  • 2)

    Ph.D. program
    ① Students who completed registration for more than 4 semesters for Ph.D. program
    ② Earned (or will earn) minimum number of credits for completion with GPA over 3.0
    ③ Students who completed study enrollment (research registration)
    ④ Students who earned pre-requisite courses with GPA over 3.0 (only applicable to recipient for Pre-requisite courses)
    ⑤ Students who submitted a research plan for thesis and a pledge of research ethics
    ⑥ Students who passed the foreign language exam and comprehensive exam
    ⑦ Before the abstract submission, students who published a research paper in a journal which is recognized by the University (Thomson Reuters, Science Citation Index): more than 1 publication in SCI-level, more than 2 in KCI-level or 1 in SCI-level for Social Pharmacy students (major advisor should be a corresponding author, acceptable with exact publication date)

Thesis Submission Qualification

    Master’s Program
    1) Students who completed registration for more than 4 semesters (more than 3 semesters for early completion of master’s program and undergraduate/master’s integrated program)
    2) Earned (or will earn) minimum number of credits for completion with GPA over 3.0
    3) Students who earned pre-requisite courses with GPA over 3.0 (only apply to recipient for Pre-requisite courses)
    4) Students who submitted a research plan for thesis and a pledge of research ethics
    5) Students who passed the foreign language exam and comprehensive exam
    6) Students whose presentation of a thesis abstract is passed

  • B

    Ph.D. Program (including Master’s/Ph.D. Integrated Program)
    1) Students who completed registration for more than 4 semesters (more than 6 semesters for Master’s/Ph.D. Integrated Program)
    2) Earned (or will earn) minimum number of credits for completion with GPA over 3.0
    3) Students who completed study enrollment (reserach registration)
    4) Students who earned pre-requisite courses with GPA over 3.0 (only apply to recipient for Pre-requisite courses)
    5) Students who submitted a research plan for thesis and a pledge of research ethics
    6) Students who passed the foreign language exam and comprehensive exam
    7) Students with an above standard research record:
    - More than 1 publications in SCI-level journal (or more than 2 publications in KCI-level journal for Social Pharmacy majors)
    - Lead author/corresponding author only
    - Publication-finalized thesis acceptable
